One of the most common active ingredients found in over-the-counter acne treatments is benzoyl peroxide. [0, 48, 85, 86]
This compound works by killing the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, which is a primary contributor to acne development. Benzoyl peroxide also helps to clear out dead skin cells and excess oil that clog pores, making it a dual-action treatment. Products with benzoyl peroxide are available in various concentrations, typically ranging from 2.5% to 10%. Similarly, make sure to regularly clean items that come into contact with your face, such as pillowcases, mobile phones, and sunglasses. [49, 23, 142]
Adopting these lifestyle changes can significantly help in preventing acne breakouts. While it may take some time to see results, consistency and dedication to these habits will ultimately contribute to clearer, healthier skin. [129, 60]

The Role Of Stress In Acne Development
Stress is an integral part of modern life and its impact reaches far beyond mental well-being, permeating into various aspects of physical health as well, including skin health. The influence of stress on acne development is a subject of growing research, shedding light on how emotional turmoil and psychological strain can exacerbate this common skin condition. When we experience stress, the body responds by activating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to the release of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. [143, 144]
Elevated levels of cortisol can result in a series of physiological changes that influence the skin. Increased cortisol production stimulates the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin to produce more sebum, the oily substance that helps to lubricate and protect the skin. Excess sebum can clog pores, creating an environment conducive to the growth of acne-causing bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes. [145, 146, 7]
Moreover, stress can contribute to inflammation, which is a core component of acne development. Chronic stress triggers a pro-inflammatory state in the body, characterized by the release of inflammatory cytokines, which can aggravate pre-existing acne or lead to the formation of new lesions. This perpetual inflammatory response can hinder the skin’s natural healing process, resulting in prolonged acne outbreaks and increased susceptibility to severe forms of acne such as cystic acne, which is painful, deep, and often leaves scars. [147, 15, 58]
The intricate link between the mind and skin, often referred to as the brain-skin axis, further explains how psychological stress impacts acne. The skin, being a highly sensitive organ, can directly react to psychological stress through the release of neuropeptides and neuroendocrine factors from nerve endings present in the skin. These chemical messengers influence the behavior of skin cells, including keratinocytes and sebocytes, leading to heightened inflammation and imbalances in skin barrier function, both of which are critical in the development and exacerbation of acne. [148, 15, 141]
Another less direct but significant way stress contributes to acne is through its impact on lifestyle choices and behaviors. When individuals are stressed, they may resort to poor dietary habits, such as consuming high-glycemic-index foods and dairy, which have been linked to increased acne lesions. Additionally, stress can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to sleep deprivation, which further elevates cortisol levels and exacerbates skin issues. [149, 44, 147]
The decreased self-care that often accompanies stress, whether it manifests as neglecting a proper skincare routine or engaging in skin-picking behaviors, can further worsen acne symptoms. [6]
Addressing acne effectively thus demands a comprehensive approach that includes stress management as a critical component. Integrating stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, deep-breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can be beneficial in mitigating the adverse effects of stress on the skin. Furthermore, cultivating a healthy work-life balance and seeking professional psychological support in the form of therapy or counseling can provide pathways for reducing overall stress levels, which may, in turn, help alleviate acne. [15, 147, 150]
In conclusion, the role of stress in acne development is multifaceted, involving direct biochemical changes triggered by stress hormones, inflammation, and indirect impacts on lifestyle and behavior. Understanding and addressing the effects of stress can therefore be an essential part of a holistic approach to acne treatment, offering a pathway to not only clearer skin but also improved overall well-being. [151, 15]

Long-Term Strategies For Maintaining Clear Skin
Maintaining clear skin over the long term after healing from acne involves a multifaceted approach that goes beyond short-term solutions. It requires consistent care, lifestyle adaptations, and attention to various factors that can influence skin health. One of the most crucial strategies for maintaining clear skin is adopting a regular skincare routine tailored to individual skin types and concerns. This routine should at minimum include cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen daily. [0, 152, 153, 100]
Using products that are non-comedogenic and suitable for acne-prone skin can help prevent pores from becoming clogged, which is a common catalyst for breakouts. Cleansing the skin gently but thoroughly removes dirt, oil, and makeup that can contribute to acne formation. Over-washing, however, can strip the skin of its natural oils, potentially leading to increased oil production and new breakouts. Therefore, finding the right balance in cleansing is key. [0, 154, 155, 156]
Moisturizing is vital even for those with oily skin, as it helps maintain the skin’s barrier function and prevents it from becoming dehydrated. Dehydrated skin can produce excess oil to compensate, leading to clogged pores and acne. Sunscreen is essential regardless of skin type, as it protects against ultraviolet (UV) light which can exacerbate acne and cause hyperpigmentation. It is advisable to choose a sunscreen that is specifically designed for the face and is oil-free to avoid added greasiness. [42, 39, 40, 155]
Diet also plays a significant role in long-term acne management. While the relationship between diet and acne can vary from person to person, certain foods and dietary habits are generally considered beneficial. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can provide the necessary nutrients to support healthy skin. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the severity of acne. [157, 158, 103, 48]
Likewise, incorporating antioxidants through foods like berries, nuts, and green leafy vegetables can protect the skin from oxidative stress and inflammation. On the other hand, high-glycemic-index foods and excessive dairy consumption have been linked to acne in some individuals. Monitoring and adjusting dietary intake can help identify and manage personal triggers. [48, 4, 157]
Hydration is another cornerstone of maintaining clear skin. Drinking ample water throughout the day helps in flushing out toxins from the body and keeping the skin hydrated. Adequate water intake supports overall bodily functions, including skin cell regeneration, which is crucial for healing and maintaining clear skin. [81, 159, 76]
Stress management is equally important as stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, which in turn can trigger acne flare-ups. Incorporating practices such as regular exercise, meditation, and adequate sleep can help manage stress levels. Exercise not only reduces stress but also increases blood circulation, which can help nourish the skin cells and keep them healthy. Sleep, often underestimated, plays a vital role in skin health as well. [84, 64, 147, 38]
During sleep, the body goes into repair mode, and lack of adequate rest can manifest as skin issues, including acne. [147]
Lastly, avoiding the temptation to touch or pick at the skin is crucial. Picking at acne can lead to infections, scarring, and more prolonged healing times. Instead, it’s better to address breakouts with targeted treatments such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or retinoids, as recommended by a dermatologist. [160, 161, 162]
In conclusion, long-term strategies for maintaining clear skin after healing from acne are comprehensive and require sustained effort and care. By adopting a consistent skincare routine, paying attention to diet and hydration, managing stress, and avoiding skin irritation, one can significantly contribute to the overall health and clarity of their skin. [48, 5]
